EPIC 1 TWO story photograph

EPIC 1 TWO isn't just a name. It was a callsign carried into one of the fiercest battles Australian soldiers had faced in generations.

On 11 June 2010, in Afghanistan’s Kandahar Province, Australian Special Operations troops from 2 Squadron, Special Air Service Regiment and A Company, 2nd Commando Regiment were drawn into relentless fighting during the Battle of Shah Wali Kot.

What unfolded would become one of the defining battles of Australia’s longest war. Both units would later be awarded the Battle Honour Eastern Shah Wali Kot, the first Battle Honour awarded to an Australian Army unit since the Vietnam War. That day, a lot of brave men did a lot of brave things.

Among them was Ben Roberts-Smith, who would later be awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia, our nation’s highest military honour for acts of valour.

On his right arm that day was his designated callsign. As second-in-command of the first patrol of E Troop, that callsign was EPIC 1 TWO.

EPIC 1 TWO is forged in adversity. It is for the people who know what it means to be counted out. To have the odds stacked against them. To be knocked down, tested, doubted or treated unfairly and yet still make the decision to keep moving forward. Because you don't always get to choose the fight. But you do get to choose how you meet it.

Stay comfortable in the chaos.
Back yourself when no one else will.
Find a way forward.
Find a way to win.

EPIC 1 TWO is for the underdog who refuses to stay down.
